VENUS is an illustrated poetry book. An otherworldly tapestry exploring the weird. VENUS is four A1 paintings depicting the narrative of the Insect angel Princess Hymen. Summoned from an egg by Cassian: the poet saint of the future, Hymen and the horse fall in love, travel through the void and destroy the Antichrist. It’s a love poem in four parts, illustrated using segments of the paintings. It won me the Outstanding Achievement Award at my Masters exhibition at Falmouth University.
The story is a weirdscape: magical girls and creatures running wild in a glittery, skull-infested wasteland. Romantic apocalypses under an irradiated, rainbow sky.
The book utilises apocalyptic creative writing, fertility cults and black-out poetry. Quasi-religious imagery, feminine sexuality and weirdity are the building blocks of my personal mythology.
The poems are an exercise in illustration themselves. I have shaped them to accompany the images, the result being a visual spectacle rather than a wall of text. The imagery is inspired by surrealist artworks and the symbolism that runs through.
my Illustration work is a constant state of transformation, the work flowers and dies and changes shape into something new and weird and good – but those symbols remain throughout.
Enter the dream world of THE ZONE where youth glitters and dies in artificial ecstasy and the end is nigh. Man will reap what he sews with the woman he creates/destroys/creates once more. A nun will touch god and god will reject her and die. She cannot stand to see love evermore and becomes the Antichrist. The young lovers must destroy her to be together again.
